Rutherford County is one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. Murfreesboro is the county seat and was once the capital of Tennessee until 1826 when Nashville was named the capital. Murfreesboro is the site of the greatest casualties of the Civil War when based on percentages. Between December 31, 1862 and January 2, 1863, 23,515 lives were lost during the Battle of Stones River, also known as the Battle of Murfreesboro. Rutherford County includes the cities of Eagleville, La Vergne, Murfreesboro, and Smyrna.
